hi everyone jeff gote here with pacific yacht systems here we've got a question from a fellow boater asking from john this may be a silly question no such thing actually not on boats anyways what is the purpose of a shunt i'm installing solar panels on my boat and i already have a battery monitor on board good on you battery monitors are one of my favorite products do i attach the negative wire from the soar monitor going to the batteries to the shunt or straight to the batteries all right so this is actually really good because we're talking about integration of two different type of products a battery monitor and a battery monitor most of the time in most cases like a victron or xantrex are going to be using a shunt which is a device that basically measures that has a known resistance and that known resistance what you're doing is you're measuring the voltage differential across this known resistance and we all know from our classes in elec maybe if you had some in college or university that v equals ir so voltage we measure we know what resistance is and therefore we know calculate current okay so shunt is a device that allows you to calculate current when you're installing a solar panel on your boat and you want to know where you should mount the negative coming from the controller the instructions in the manual are going to say you should bring the negative from your solar controller to the batteries but what they failed to say is they don't know if you have a battery monitor on board or not and if you bring the negative from the solar controller directly to the batteries and you bypass the shunt your solar panels and hence the solar controllers will not be included in your battery monitor and you'll never see a charge from an amp perspective on your battery monitor from your solar panels so it's essential that no negative wire ever bypasses the shut because it's not going to be counted so you have to put the negative coming from the controller directly to the negative distribution and so therefore it is counted by the shunt and hence will show up on the battery monitor and that's basically what you need to do with a shunt and a battery monitor and a solar controller thanks for watching everyone and feel free ask more questions down below we're doing this as often as we can thank you English (auto-generated) AllToolsRelatedFrom Pacific Yacht SystemsRecently uploaded
