What to Do After a Boat Fire?

hi everyone jeff cote here

with votingtechtalk.com

so uh we commonly get asked questions

from boaters around the world

jeff i've had a boat fire i had

melted wires on my boat what now

right we've had the privilege of

helping voters deal with this problem

over

many many years now and my first piece

of advice

is to not rush the process

this is going to be painful and hope

and thinking that things are just going

to work out is probably wishful thinking

and we know what that is

wishing it so doesn't mean it's going to

be so

so the first thing you got to do is

assessment

now if you've wired the boat yourself or

you've done most of the stuff on

yourself

make sure you have a wide view

of looking for problems meaning

do not get laser focus and think that

the problem

is only what you're seeing now

be curious what could be a domino effect

of this electrical fire in one place

could have had affected

other places on your boat and the answer

is most likely yes

we've seen fires where a dead short

happens at the panel and then the whole

bundle

from the engine harness from the panel

all the way back

to the back of the boat is completely

crisp so they could have said oh it's

just here it's just at the panel

let's not worry so the first thing

remember first thing

is really keep a wide perspective

on all the things that could have

happened most likely it's going to be a

big deal

so you'll probably have to bring in

either your insurance company

or an adjuster this is not going to be

trivial it's not going to be a couple

hundred dollars most of the cases it's

thousands or tens of thousands of

dollars of damage

so hopefully you've got a good policy

and the adjuster would come on your boat

and do an assessment of what the hell is

going on

and they'll also have a different

perspective than your perspective and

that's the thing too you know like

sometimes

even for us when we come on board we

might send one tech

and then we'll send another tech two

different perspectives

right they're both looking and we're

trying to make sure that they don't even

really talk to each other we're trying

to have

a different perspective on the boat

that's going to give us a more complete

perspective

of what happened so get an adjuster on

board

either yourself or even other people and

start looking for

problems that's the first thing because

remember those problems have to be

solved

and wishing them to be solved just

because you don't want them to be there

is not going to work you can't do it you

know

and so you're looking for places

where one wire might have melted but

because a lot of our wires are actually

in bundles where there's multiple wires

in one grouping

what happens is that one wire might have

melted

and then it's going to make the other

wires in the bundle melt

and so now you're going to have a

literally domino effect

snowballing effect whatever we want to

call it but it's one little thing that

caused many

bad things and so what you're looking

for is you're looking for

those bundles look where that cable was

routed from a to b

and see okay where else did it touch did

it affect while i was dead shorting and

all the insulation on that jacket might

have melted

in certain spots and it's not going to

melt in all the spots evenly because a

wire in

air is not like a wire in a bundle so

the wire in the bundle

is going to be hotter than a wire in

just thin air

and so you're actually looking for

wherever the bundle is in

other wires and you're looking for oh

did it affect the other wires in that

bundle so you've got to be curious you

have to

um and then once you've assessed the

situation and truly looked for

everything that has gone wrong

then you can start planning on fixing it

get a second opinion bring somebody else

on board we do that all the time that's

why we like working with adjusters

um you got to do that and then what you

probably have to do is you're probably

going to go

you're going to know what you need to do

and then there's going to be things that

are questionable

right there are certain things that

you'll be like i got to do this but what

about here like do i have to do that

and in those situations what we do is

yeah you got to do that too

so you do what you need to do and you do

certain things that you're like i'm not

too sure but i think it might have done

that too

and just for the sake of your own sanity

because there's nothing wrong with a

boat worse than a boat fire because it

takes your then your whole confidence in

your boat

so you're trying to get back that

confidence and the way to get back that

confidence is to not

take any more shortcuts right so you do

everything you need to do

and the things you think you need to do

you you know maybe i should

do those two because it's always going

to have a tarnish on a boat to have an

electrical fire

and we had boats where we wired boats it

was you know

tons of hours 20 30 40 50 60 70 hours of

work

to re fix the wiring on a boat that had

some of the wiring that actually melted

off

so take your time go slowly and

respect the boat so that it's back to

its original shape

where you don't have those electrical

fires

and that's the reality so anyways thanks
