Charging Voltages Too High for DC Appliances

Question:

When our sailboat solar controllers are “accepting” and voltage is 14.1, 14.2; are most onboard 12 volt appliances OK? Such as Jabsco pumps, scirocco fans, incandescent lamps, keel cooled refrigerator compressor?  - Steve

Answer:

Hi Steve, In short yes. DC appliances that run on 12 VDC will easily handle voltages from 10 – 15 VDC without any problems. To recharge a lead acid battery you commonly need a charging voltage of 14.4 VDC and so it’s a common voltage.  - Jeff
