Should I Have Two 30A or One 50A Shore Power Connection?

Question:

Hi, your videos are great, and I really appreciate the information. I am basically starting from scratch on an electrical system. For awhile, I plan on spending most time connected to shore power. If you were starting this way, would you go with a 50A connection? If so, at what voltage? Thanks in advance, Kevin

Answer:

Hi Kevin, with a boat of your size, two 30 amps or one 50 amp at 120 VAC is probably plenty. When sizing shore power cord, you basically need to calculate what is the maximum amperage you’ll ever run concurrently at the dock. Some boaters with air conditioning systems, might need a 50 amp 220 VAC shore system as the AC loads from air conditioning are significant. Hope this helps.  - Jeff
