Can a Battery Booster Damage Expensive Electronics?

Question:

I am a volunteer marine rescue worker where we provide assistance to vessels that have broken down for various reasons. My question is we do carry a small jump start battery and leads to assist when it appears the vessel’s battery is flat. Given the sophistication of the electronics of boats today are we possibly opening our selves up to litigation if we damage their engines electronics modules? A car today is similar in its sophistication and the manufacturers are very specific on connecting up.  Thanks, Steven

Answer:

Hi Steven. Good question. Unfortunately not sure about the answer. Personally, haven’t come across a situation where a battery booster for a start battery damaged anything. That said, using emergency battery boosts is not something we use frequently and therefore have limited experience." - Jeff
