Battery Connections on a Boat

battery monitors water levels are really

important the other thing that we often

see is that people don't realize that

both are vibration prone environment and

I've come on multiple boats where

actually the connections of the

batteries were loops just because of

time you know when the engine starts

running

there's harmonics on a boat and for some

reason I've been on boats where I went

lose 12 golf cart batteries and I think

more than half of the posts the nuts

were actually vibrated off they actually

had vibrated off onto the box batteries

and then down and so that was for

whatever reason the batteries at a

certain rpm wherever they were were

vibrating perfectly for the nuts that

weren't using lock washers to undo

themselves so not having wing nuts on a

batteries essential having a lock

washers essential and don't think that

because you tighten it the first time

that it's done it's like a car tire you

know after three months you should

retighten the bolt again on a battery

the same thing so you know you want to

inspect and make sure that the

connections are tight I've seen boats

where suddenly they think they have a

large battery bank by the jumper cable

between one bank and the other that's

supposed to be together is loose and

most of the current is coming from only

the first half of the bank the other one

is there but it's so bad we connected or

corroded that it's actually not pulling

its weight and so that's essential as

well
