hello everyone  jeff cote here with pacific yacht  systems uh we're doing an ask bys we've  got a question from melissa  melissa i asked jeff what is a short  that you keep talking about in your  videos and why is that something that  should matter to me and to us as voters  well that's a good question so a short  is a way to describe  when two wires a positive and a negative  wire  in a 12-volt system but this could also  apply to ac but let's just focus on dc  for the moment  when the positive and the negative wire  don't have a load  um and they are accidentally touching so  that could be  for example and i've seen cases where  someone drills  or puts a screw in a wall and doesn't  realize it but shorts  basically causes a connection between a  positive and negative wire  and that would cause an accidental short  which means  it would actually cause unlimited amount  of current to go  through from the positive to the  negative wire and it would cause a fire  on  a boat or anywhere it doesn't matter so  a short is something as a big no-no  you don't ever want that to happen on  your boat if it does it's extremely  serious  and that's why boat builders and  ourselves  go to great lengths to fuse every single  wire in a boat  and at home we do the same thing we have  circuit breaker panels  and those circuit breaker panels there  are there to protect  all the wire all the way to the outlet  and to the appliance  in the case of an accidental short  either in the device itself  or on the wire run and if you did not  have a circuit breaker to protect that  wire  the short would cause a fire and it  would be very serious  could lose the boat could lose life and  that's why every single  circuit on a boat except the starter  circuit has to be  fused and protected so great question by  melissa  thanks everyone for watching and feel  free to ask more questions post them  down below and we're going to do this as  often as we can  thanks for watching this video if you've  got further questions that we didn't  answer  please ask them below or go on our  website and fill up one of the forms  and we'll get a chance to do so support  us to keep this channel ad free  by donating via paypal or buying one of  these lovely hats  the links are below and lastly if you  haven't subscribed to  our channel please do so that way you'll  get the regular content  and in closing thanks for watching  you
