Installing Shunts if Exposed to the Elements?

Question:

I had a basic question for Jeff regarding Victron Shunts. I see the one I'm installing on my boat and the circuit board is open to the atmosphere. I'm concerned that the marine environment is going to compromise the electronics within a year. Has anyone encapsulated the electronics or potted them in epoxy to protect them? If so, does that change the performance of the shunt due to now eliminated air flow? - Jason

Answer:

I would agree that if the circuit boards on the shunts are exposed to the elements they may be compromised.  When we do installs we try to find safe dry locations for mounting them or install them in weatherproof boxes. We haven’t had any experience with an epoxy coating or the potential air flow issues, might be best to check with Victron on this.
