Can Fluctuating Solar Charging Voltages Harm My Batteries?

Question:

Hi Jeff, I have 4 flooded lead acid house batteries connected to one solar panel which satisfies all my charging requirements. However, when at anchor the charging fluctuates as the boat swings with wind, current & passing clouds. Is this a concern to battery health, if so, is there a remedy? - Brent

Answer:

Hi Brent, as you mentioned, it is totally normal for a solar array to output varying voltages depending on sunny conditions, solar panel shading, and battery condition throughout the day. Your batteries won’t be damaged by this variable charging voltage. - Jeff
