AC GFCI Outlets on Boats?

Question:

For safety, I want to put my boat on a GFCI, but it will not work with GFCI. Everyone tells me boat DO NOT work on GFCI, so forget about it. Is it true that boat can't use GFCI? if not , why not?  - Hiker Bill

Hi Hiker Bill, GFCIs, i.e. ground fault circuit interrupters are a great idea as they measure current imbalance on the hot and neutral AC circuits to an AC outlet. In a damp and corrosion prone marine environment the 5 milliamp threshold of current imbalance that triggers the GFCI is often too tight and this causes nuisance tripping. Hence why GFCIs are not always recommended aboard boats.  - Jeff
