I have a question about alternators. Will a larger alternator charge my boat batteries faster then the one that came with the engine? Or will a new alternator of the same size and spec solve the problem? - Chris
When selecting an alternator, two of the main variables to choose from are alternator output (measured in amps) and alternator casing size. For instance, it’s possible to purchase an alternator in a small case that produces 55 amps or even 120 amps. An alternator with larger amperage output will recharge your batteries faster assuming your battery bank can take a faster charge rate.
