Can I Extend a VHF Cable That is Too Short?

Question:

Hi Jeff, I will be replacing an older VHF radio with Icom M424G on my Bayliner B0487.  I am not sure the existing VHF antenna will be up to the task as it is also 16 years old.  For one thing, the antenna connection cable will be too short by 8 feet. What should I be looking for in an antenna?  If I the existing 8 foot antenna will be OK, can I get an extension cable? Thanks for your help.  - Keith

Answer:

Hi Keith, It’s not advisable to extend a VHF coaxial cable as every connection point creates a loss 1/2 DB of power. My recommendation would be to run a single (non-extended) coaxial from the antenna to the VHF. - Jeff
