In preparation for the Vancouver International Boat Show, running February 8-12, we have compiled a list of our favourite electrical items for a boat. Attend one of Jeff's Electrical 101 presentations at the boat show and come chat with us at our booth about an Electrical Audit.

Solbian Flex Sun Power
February 2012
  • Pros:
  • - Many mounting options: zippers, double-sided tape, and grommets
  • - High output solar panel: 22.5%
  • - Highest output (per sq. ft.) to weight ratio
  • Cons:
  • - Two to three times more expensive for similar rigid solar panel
US Battery AGM L16
October 2011
  • Pros:
  • - Smaller footprint (although taller)
  • - Higher Charge and discharge rates than Flooded Batteries
  • - Low Hydrogen loss
  • Cons:
  • - Requires two batteries in series for 12 Volt systems
  • - Expensive
  • - Weight
Smart Plug - 30A Boatside Inlet and Connector

  • Pros:
  • - Trip thermostat in inlet cuts power before overheating
  • - Straight electrical blades with 20x more contact area
  • - Some insurance companies will credit up to $150 for installation
  • Cons:
  • - Existing shorepower cord needs to be modified
  • - Need Smartplug adaptor for old 30A receptacle

  • Pros:
  • - Read your battery bank like a fuel gauge
  • - Displays voltage, current, amphours and remaining capacity
  • - Secondary battery bank voltage monitoring
  • Cons:
  • - Does not measure amps for secondary battery bank
  • - No temperature compensation measurements
Magnum MS Series Inverter/Charger

  • Pros:
  • - Pure sine wave AC output
  • - Reliable
  • - 3 stage charger with equalization and battery saver modes
  • Cons:
  • - Remote panel is necessary for some set up options and to display error msgs
  • - Chassis ground connection size and location could be better
  • - Heavy

Q: My Trojan 105 golf cart lead acid batteries are finished and need replacing. What's your recommendation on what types of batteries I should get: AGM or lead acid?
