November 2016


November 18 – 19 – Clayoquot Oyster Festival – This year is the 20th anniversary of showcasing Tofino’s favourite bivalve.  It is held in conjunction with the area’s harvest when the oysters are at their plumpest. There is a costume party, oyster farm tours and a gala chefs competition.

November 17 – 19 – Pacific Marine Expo - Held annually at CenturyLink Field in Seattle, this is the largest commercial marine tradeshow on the westcoast, serving mariners from Alaska to California.  There are presentations on industry education, safety, regulatory matters and technological advances.  All mixed in with a Fisher of the Year contest, Fisher Poets and daily happy hours.

November 22 - 23 – Boating BC Conference – Once a year, the recreational boating industry in BC gets together to connect, learn and share ideas.

October 7 - 9 – The 15th Annual CrabFest – Port Angeles, Washington - This event celebrates the world-famous Dungeness Crab, named after the nearby village of Dungeness.  It features 14 restaurants, cooking demonstrations with celebrity chefs, Chowder Cook-Off, the Grab-a-Crab Derby, local wine and beer, craft and merchant vendors, and live music. Rain or shine, this is the “party” of the season and admission is always FREE!

October 8 - 10  – 20th Annual Gabriola Thanksgiving Studio Tour – One of the longest-running studio tours in the region featuring over 80 studios.

October 14 - 16 – If you love mushrooms, this is the event for you!  The 8th Annual Shroom Festival in Maderia Park.  There will be vendors, cooking demonstrations and a public foray.

October 14 - 23 ArtSea Festival in Sidney is a 10 day celebration of the arts featuring a Paint & Cocktail Night at the Victoria Distillers.

October 15Saltspring Island Annual Grape Stomp – Bring your picnic blanket and listen to the Jose Sanchez Cuban band.  Participate in the group stomp competition, taste wines and enjoy complimentary snacks.

October 21 – 23Tofino Paddle & Surf Championships – A family event that includes a movie night, awards banquet and 3 full days at the beach.

October 27WVYC - Electrical 101 with Jeff Cote - Have you ever wondered if you are getting the maximum out of your batteries?  Do you really have to run your generator every day while at anchor? Do you check your electrical wires for corrosion and chafing on a regular basis?   It's not the most glamorous side of boating but it is a necessity and ignoring it only makes it more dangerous.  Join us for an hour of no-nonsense, plain English Electrical 101 with Jeff Cote.  This presentation is designed for beginners, tech-savvy, and DIY experts alike.

October 1 - 31 – Victoria - Jacques Cousteau’s son, Jean-Michel, has a break through new 3D IMAX called Cousteau’s Secret Ocean.  Using a brand new underwater filming technology to capture never before seen species in their natural environment.

September 2 – 4Sunshine Music Festival – Powell River – The 34th Annual Festival is a celebration of music from across Canada and the world.  Performances take place at the Palm Beach Park, lots of local food vendors and a craft market.

September 2 – 4 - Victoria Classic Boat Festival – Victoria – Set in the Inner Harbour, this 39th annual gathering of classic boats is a beautiful collection of traditional boats, both yachts and workboats.

September 8 – 11Mosquito Creek Boatshow – North Vancouver – Western Canada’s largest floating boat show includes new and previously loved boats for sale.  There are no vendor booths on the shore this year as they are focusing on the floating portion of the show.

September 11Vancouver Street Food Festival – Anchor downtown and walk to Pacific Boulevard where over 30 food trucks will be serving everything from Aussie Pie to Vij’s.  Live music, family entertainment, artisan market and a beer garden.  This is a free event.

September 16 – 18Pender Harbour Jazz Festival – Now in its 20th year, includes free events plus ticketed events held at an assortment of venues.  Persephone Brewing Company will be on site and the Slo-Cat boat will be running between Garden Bay and Madeira Park.

August 6Galiano Wine & Beer Tasting Festival – just a short 20 minute walk from the ferry and the Village to the Community Lions Park.  This 24th annual, open air event features unlimited tastings, fresh made finger foods, entertainment, a crested Riedel crystal wine glass and a beer glass, all for $45.  There will also be a silent auction, 50/50 draw, crafts from local artists along with books and gifts.  All proceeds go to support the Galiano Health Care Society.

August 5–7 – Sechelt Coasters Car Club 21st Annual Sleepy Hollow Car Show, also known as the Festival of the Rolling Arts.  The Friday night, 30 km cruise goes from Sechelt to Halfmoon Bay and includes over 450 classic cars.  Followed by the show ‘n shine on Saturday and dinner.  Sunday is a cruise to Pender Harbour or drag racing at the local Sechelt Airport.

August 6Nanaimo Symphony by the Sea – A free outdoor summer concert performed by the Vancouver Island Symphony conducted by Calvin Dyck.

August 6-7Saltspring Music & Garlic Festival - $40 per day or $75 for a two-day pass, held at Paradise Farm on Musgrave Road.

August 13Gabriola Island Salmon BBQ – This 60th Annual Fundraiser for the Hall includes musicians young and old with a great salmon dinner and beer garden. Gabriola is in the process of ridding the island of plastic bottles and have asked you to bring your own water bottle to refill inside the hall.

August 13-14Hackett Park Arts & Crafts Fair – Now in its 29th year, the fair is set amongst the trees of Hackett Park in Sechelt, and features local musicians such as Joe Stanton (one of our faves).

August 20Chemainus Jazz Festival – Held at Waterwheel Park, this year features a diverse and eclectic mix of New Orleans, Soul, Swingin’ Jazz, Improv with a touch of Rock and Latin grooves.

August 25–28Vancouver Wooden Boat Festival – This annual family friendly festival also includes a family boatbuilding event.  Granville Island.

July 2 – September 3Butchart Gardens Fireworks Display – There are 5 mooring buoys in Butchart Cove, anchorage in Tod Inlet or moorage in Brentwood Bay.  Butchart Gardens has a dinghy wharf that is free to use while you are in the park.

July 8 – 10Comox Music Festival – The lineup includes The Trews, Matt Anderson, 54-40, Bill Bourne, Ashley MacIsaac and Jim Byrnes

July 17Nanaimo Silly Boat Regatta – This is the 32nd annual regatta and fundraiser for the Nanaimo Child Development Centre.  There is even a children’s mini regatta and lots of free family activities.

July 21 – 24Nanaimo Championship Bathtub Race -  If you are out on the water, the race starts at 11:00 on the 24th and runs for an hour and a half from the Nanaimo Harbour to Maffeo Sutton Park.  It is quite a spectacle from the water, now in its 50th year.

July 22 – 24The 32nd Annual Islands Folk Festival held at Providence Farm in Duncan, BC.  Tie into Maple Bay, Genoa Bay or Cowichan Bay and it is only a 15 minute cab ride.

July 23Powell River Sea Fair Parade – If you are a vintage car fan, this is a fun parade.  Every year they have a great collection of colourful floats along with some beautiful collector cars.

July 23 – 24Gibsons Sea Calvacade – This is the 48th Circus by the Sea that includes a run, parade, family day, pancake breakfast, the Keats to Armours swim and fireworks. 

July 23, 27 & 30Honda Celebration of Light – English Bay comes alive with fireworks.  Netherlands on the 23rd, Australia on the 27th and the USA on the 30th.  As part of the Sunset Beach Festival, Shorefest will be showcasing some of Canada’s top bands including Loverboy. You can even save a spot by reserving at the Inukshuk Lounge, YVR Observation Deck or The Keg.

June 11Martin Marine Round Bowen Race - There are normally 100+ plus boats registered, and with only 1 start, makes it one of the largest single starts on the west coast.

June 11 Burrard Yacht Club Classic Car & Boat Show Come out and see the beautiful wooden boats and restored cars at the annual Classic Car & Boat Show. Lots of events all weekend topped off with an amazing dinner and dance on the breakwater. Proceeds go to the Disabled Sailing Association.

June 17 – 19 – Gibsons Landing Jazz Festival – too many great performers to list.

June 18 – MEC Vancouver Paddlefest – from 10 – 3 on Jericho Beach – includes skills clinics, demo boards and a gearswap.

June 25– Mill Bay RCM-SAR BBQ Fundraiser, Cobblestone Pub, Cobble Hill, BC
