Boater's Picks for Favourite Apps on the iPad - Part 3: Life on the Water

It's time for more awesome iPad apps.  As a reminder from Part 1 + 2, I gathered a bunch of my boating friends and we talked apps.  If an app was mentioned by three different boaters then it made the list. Many of these apps provide a free version; however, I have included the price for the full version.

Flipboard Personalized News Feed   (Free) by Flipboard Inc. was named Apple's iPad App of the Year and one of TIME's top 50 innovations of 2010.  Flipboard is a fast and organized way to flip through the news, magazines, photos, videos, and updates your friends are sharing on Facebook, Twitter, Google Reader, LinkedIn, Flickr, and Instagram. See your social media in a magazine layout that is easy to scan and fun to read.  It really is a one stop app for all your news and allows you more time to get on with your galley chores. How about those evenings when you are lying on the bow of your boat looking up at the stars and, possibly, considering a bit of celestial navigation?  Or maybe you just like to say celestial navigation?

iMariner  ($29.99) by DPFC Software is a complete toolbox for celestial navigation including sight, fix, meridian, starfinder and solar compass.  Starwalk Interactive Astronomy Guide ($4.99) by Vito Technology Inc. enables you to point your iPad at the sky and see what stars, constellations, and satellites you are looking at in real-time. I have this app and I love it.

Another cool idea is to turn your iPad into a flashlight with Flashlight (Free) by John Haney Software that fills your screen with bright light and includes fully customizable special effects like strobe, SOS, and Halloween lights.  myLite Flashlight (Free) by Doapp, Inc. is the original flashlight app with over 3.5 million downloads.  Brightest Flashlight Pro ($0.99) by claims to be the brightest flashlight available. Have you ever tried to apply lipstick while on the back deck but can't find a mirror?  Well this app is great but is only for the iPad2 as it requires a front-facing camera.  It is called Mirror ($0.99) by i4software and provides you with a physical mirror on your device.

Another rainy day on the boat?  Turn your kids loose with a chunk of line and one of these apps.  Knot Guide (1.99) by Winkpass Creations, Inc. is currently the #1 knot app on iTunes with 95 knots and continuous additions.  There is also Animated Knots by Grog ($4.99) from the creators of the web's #1 knot site, Grogg LLC.  This is the most comprehensive teaching and reference tool for boaters and fishers. Watch as knots tie themselves in simple step-by-step photo animations.
